Writing Reflection

Explain one or more specific aspects of your writing that have improved this year. In this explanation, you must directly refer to at least two specific pieces of writing that you produced for this class. You may use any assignment, project, writing sample, draft, blog entry, etc. You should discuss the writing tips & strategies we studied, the processes & methods we used, the critiques & drafts we employed and the products we created (feel free to use these specific key terms to keep your reflection focused).
Our first blog assignment was to outline what we hoped to gain in junior year, what are overall goals are. I wrote that my main goal was to improve my writing, reading and participation in class. I feel proud of my self because I think my writing has improved tremendously over the course of the year. In the beginning of the year I was really shy in class; I felt I was not smart compared to everyone else. Joann, my 10th grade teacher, told me that Randy is a great writer and he is going to push us to give high quality work. I was scared that randy was going to put me on the spot and embarrass me. So I decided not to participate at all in class. The first week past and I realize that randy was really chill so I decided to take honor. I knew that if I took honors it was going to be a challenge because English is not my first language. I decided to take on the honors agreement because I want to become a better writer and I need challenging work where am expected to produce better quality work.
Our first writing project was the American Icon. When I had finished writing my piece I felt I had produced a high quality work. I tried using all of the writing tips we had learned to that point. I used the loop as an outline for my writing piece; I started with a quote and fished it with facts. I compared my first writing project in the 11th grade American icon to an article I wrote and felt the most proud of in 10th grade. I saw a big difference between both of them. My 10th grade article is kind off just there, it has good information but not a really audience and a point trying to be prove. One of the first writing tips we learned in Randy’s class is that amateur writers write for themselves. Professional writers write for and an audience. I realized that writing for my self and not an audience was making my writing pointless. I had good ideas but I didn’t know what I was trying to prove. On my American icon I start off by quoting a poem Sor Juana said, then I took the reader deeper into who Sor Juana is and I end with facts to leave the reader with something to think about I felt I used the loop very well for my first time.
The loop improved my writing tremendously; I started to enjoy writing! Our first honors assignment was to write and article using the loop. In one of the group critiques we had, Randy showed my article as a good example. I was very happy and started to feel comfortable in class.
During internship I was asked to write and article about NAFTA. I was scared at first because I knew writing is not my strength but I could not say no. I send my first draft to Diana my 9th grade teacher so I could give my mentor something that has already been critiqued. Diana wrote back to me saying that she taught it was good and she didn’t have any corrections. I couldn’t believe it! I always got my paper back bleeding with correction. I gave it to my mentor and he liked it; he made a few corrections and then he published it.
When we started brainstorming for ampersand I tried to think of a topic I was passionate about and I want people to be aware. I tried applying a lot the writing tip we had learned over the year in my ampersand-writing piece. I wanted it to be the highest quality work I had produced in class. The writing tips I used the most was concerts not pancakes to keep my sentences strong improve quantity to improve quality removing “ing” making meaning early and many more. Overall I think I did pretty well, I mixed my personal experience with facts and I think I left the reader with something to think about. What helped the most was drafting and revision I went trough about 2 drafts of brainstorming and 3 writing critiques "create, share, critique and repeat! I know that my writing is not even close to high quality work but it has improved. I appreciate the time that Larry Rosenstock the CEO of HTH took to came to talk to my class about how proud he is of ampersand. Larry read some sentence he liked from my article and explained how he agreed and connected with them. I felt I had accomplished that reading tip were the writer creates a relation ship with the audience.


Describe one specific goal for your future writing. Your explanation of your goal(s) must include some or all of the following: writing samples from this year, writing strategies you have used in the past, writing strategies or techniques you would like to develop, examples from authors you respect, etc.

Now that I learned how to write! My goal for my future writing is to expand my vocabulary. This was one of my primary goals when the year began, but I didn’t have a chance to improve on it as much as I wanted to. I want to expand my vocabulary so I can transfer my ideas to paper with more power and imagery.
One of the authors I respect is Kurt Vonnegut. I feel his writing is very interesting his analogy are very strong and the whole time you are reading his books you have a clear image of what he is talking about. It’s also kind of easy to interpret thing differently since he writes about strong topics and compares them to something completely different like babies and war.

Historical Reflections
I am very nervous to go into college, but if I have the chance of choosing a historical figure to be my roommate it will definitely be Franklin D Roosevelt. I want to major in sociology and political sciences and I think FDR can give me valuable advice. It will be such a relief to have him as a friend, I can always ask him for help and his answer are going to be the best. I have many questions about how the political world works and it would be very interesting to see what he responds. I also want to know what are his view on immigration, does he agree with 1070, what should be done to stop illegal immigration.

I admire how FDR acted with the new deal to get the United States out of the great depression. Our world is currently suffering a recession and it would be interesting to see what is going on in FDR’s mind today and the solutions he is thinking of. If he becomes president I would ask him to not forget about Latin America and to legalize weed like he did with prohibition. He would probably agree because he did it before and legalizing weed will reduce the high crime rates in lain America especially México. In conclusion we need FDR as president again he has been the most productive and well respective president I have heard about. But before he becomes president and saves the world he needs to be my roommate!

One day I would love to open up and orphanage/organization where we offer education to homeless children. I believe like FDR that “Peace, like charity, begins at home.” So if these children are not given love and home what is going to become of them? I know that FDR is the perfect person to ask him for advice in how to start this organization because he believes “We cannot always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future.” and this is exactly my goal with giving children better opportunities I want them to have a better future.

Literary Reflections...

If you could bring one character from any one book that we have read this year with you when you go to college, who would bring? Why?

If I could bring one character from the seven books we have read this year when I go to college, it will defiantly be Jay Gatsby from, The Great Gatsby because he is determine, loyal and a good hearted person. Jay Gatsby was the character I connect and understood the most. I have many friends very similar to him, they are determined, to leave their past, start a new life and work hard to turn their hopes into reality. This is something I really admire and respect from a person; I think it is essential to have something in life to fight for in order to have a real life. In my opinion Jay Gatsby was very innocent for the real world, he got lost and started fighting for the wrong dream that eventually lead to his death. “his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him." He was determined to win daisy’s “love” back with money but realized that she was not worth fighting for. I consider my self a good trustful friend and I will like to have him as a friend in college. I think he suffered a lot and thought that the only thing that was going to bring him happiness was money and Daisy. I would have help him realized a lot sooner that his goal is unreachable and worthless. Then I will convince him to change his dream in to something that will benefit a lot of people, like starting an organization in a developing country were he can help give children opportunities to succeed. I believe that jay Gatsby is a good person and will enjoy spending his money and time helping kids. Eventually this will help him replace his obsession with daisy and he will finally find peace and happiness with him self. “They’re a rotten crowed…you’re worth the whole damn bunch put together” I agree with nick Jay Gatsby could do so much better then spend his life as puppet throwing big parties in that materialistic society he is lost in.

And….. it is always good to have a rich friend as roommate. I could convince him to pay for my college, maybe buy me a car, and help me start my dream organization in Tijuana helping orphan children. I could convince that we need to offer these children better opportunities to succeed so they don’t make the same mistake he did to reach his materialistic goal (drug dealing!) I would love to have him as a roommate we can throw real parties!! convince him to buy me house in cancun!
I wish this is real!

Post Trial Reflection
1. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the prosecution. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.

The prosecution side presented three witnesses, 2 being our founding fathers john Adams and James Madison and congressmen from Arizona Raul Grijalva. The prosecution side wanted to prove that the law senate bill 1070 was violating the American sprit of immigrant history. Their goal was to start of with the founding fathers and explain with what ideas this country was founded and what immigrants represent. John Adams, the second president of the United States talked about his role in the Boston massacre. He was the lawyer protecting British soldiers who were non-citizen he believed everyone should be given free trial. He admitted that the alien sedition act (similar to SB1070) was unconstitutional. James Madison was one of the most important founding father of our country author of the bill of rights and father of the constitution. He made it clear to the jury that the constitution protects every one in American soil including non-citizens. He also said that constitution is our American sprit. Raul grijalva congressmen of Arizona explained about the situation Arizona is now and how it’s affecting the people. He also talked about how this law is useless and how this has happen before through prop 187.

2. Summarize the facts of the case, as presented by the defense. Include relevant witnesses and testimony.

The defensive presented 3 witness Jan brewer governor of Arizona, Russell pears senator of Arizona and Officer Kenneth Collins who was killed by an illegal immigrant. Their argument was that the federal government was not doing their job they decided to take action. They think that senate bill 1070 will protect the citizen of Arizona against illegal immigrants. Jan brewer said that this law will not bring any type of racial profiling but yet she didn’t have an answer to what was “reasonable suspicion” to determine if some on was an illegal immigrant. She also talked about drug cartels and kidnapping that illegal immigration has brought to Arizona. Russell Pearce also clarified what the senate bill1070 was and agreed with Jan brewer they think Arizona is in danger with so many illegal immigrants. He also contridicted the founding father James Madison because he said that they got tired of righting citizen so they wrote people no because the actually meant everyone in the constitution. Officer Kenneth Collins gave his testimony about being killed by illegal immigrant.

3. What was the most significant piece of evidence, in your personal opinion?
The witnesses gave the most important

In my opinion that most significant piece of evidence was bring up 14, 4, 5, 6, amendments and explaining what makes a law federal or state. I think when people see things with there own eyes they get a better understanding. I also taught that it was very important for James Madison the author of the bill of right to explain what each amendment means and who it protects.

From the defensive I think the most important piece of evidence were facts. They proved that a high percentage of immigrants are involved in gang and crimes. But I think that most of the immigrant that risk their lives crossing the desert is to give their family a better live not to create violence. There is a high rate of Latinos involve in gang but I think most of them where born here and don’t recognize and appreciate what their parents did for them. I also think it sad to see how 70 percent of the people in Arizona are forward the law. This makes me feel that we haven’t made any progress in human rights!


4. What was the most significant argument made, in your opinion?

The most significant argument is if sb1070 is considered a state law. I agree in how it can be enforcing the law of immigration but I think this law gives to much power to the authority and can easily lead to violation of human rights. I think that the SB1070 is not going to end immigration in Arizona or stop crime I think its actually going to stem up anger against illegal immigrants and racist citizens.

5. What do you personally believe the correct verdict should be? Do you agree with the jury? Why or why not?

I think the law is completely useless and it not only violates the constitution but human rights, which are the most important. This country has contributed a 100 percent to their immigration problem. They have helped create situations in other countries really bad that their only way to succeed is by immigrating to this country. In my opinion unites states has the power to resolve this problem but they don’t want to because a lot of people benefit from cheat immigrant work. I also think that an immigration reform is not a solution. Unites states need to work close with this countries to come up with an efficient soltution. United sates, is the older brother of Latin American and we need to help them build up a stronger government system so these 3rd world countries don’t feel the need to immigrate to a diferent country to become some one.

I think I deserve a ___ out of 50 points because I did the following things. I researched each of my witness and found ways they can contribute to my argument, proving that sb1070 is violating the sprit of immigrant history in america. I also researched about history and the constitution to understand what is our American spirit and how is sb1070 violating it. I could have done better at organizing my information by coming up with better question for my whiteness that right away supported my argument.

I'm interested to read kurt vonnegut's book because i have hear that he completely revolutionized the writing style we write and look today. i also started reading some part of the book and i though it was cool how is sound more as if he was talking other then writing like most writers do. I have read before a book of mark twain and i though it was okay but not the best book i have read so I'm interested to learn what he admire about mark twain writing.

Semester DOS, Honors History #2
World War One and World War 2 are often seen like part one and two of a big civil war in Europe. I agree with this idea—even though a civil war is within a single nation. The Great War impacted, not only the United States system of working but also the whole world. Most of our countries philosophy on war developed and cleared up during this time. After War World 2 ended the world was divided by the system of government, ideas of freedom, and power of wealth (Monroe Doctrine) eventually forming allies and enemies among our countries today.

I think it’s a essential for every country to go through a civil war it helps the countries get organize with what type of government systems they what to become. I think the main cause of both wars was because of the different governing system and land/property they wanted. Some countries still had monarchy, tsars others wanted communism capitalism fascism all being different forms of government. I think both of world wars help them clear up what they wanted to become. Today the world is divided into form of government countries are allies with other countries that share the same type of government and the most popular government system is Capitalist or communist. This is the reason why we are not friends with Cuba and North Korea because they are communist and we are capitals.

World war 2 help untied states clear up the reasons why we will go to war and they are based on are 4 freedoms. Franklin D. Roosevelt the current president at the time stated everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy: four essential human freedoms. Freedom of speech and expression. Freedom of religion freedom from want freedom of fear. We joined ww2 to because Germany was not following the 4 freedoms, which was most of them. Today we are currently in war with the Middle East for the same respond. These countries are not giving the people their 4 essential freedoms like religion speech and expresion and freedom from want. If a country does not follow these freedoms they immediately become our enemy’s. If a country was not following one of this rules if automatically because USA enemy. According to bush this its the reason why we are country in what with Iraq they where following the 4 essential human freedoms.

Once the Great War ended there was a winning side and losing side. The winner including United States and Great Britain became the most powerful countries into the world. the Monroe doctrine allowed United states to became in charge of the Americas and Great Britain in charge of Europe Africa and Asia. Latin America still to this day is depends on unites states. if their economy is bad it affects every in Latin America. This policy also stated that Europe could no longer colonize land or interfere with America—United States while view it as aggression to the US. The Doctrine also asserted that the United States couldn’t interfere with European colonies or africa the east. the United sates became to Latin America the older brother and the same thing happened to great Brittan in Europe.

My Dear Benjamin,

My love, I’m so glad to hear from you, and that you’re doing fine we all truly miss you a lot. As I read your letter I felt you where next to me—it made me remember all the good times we spend together. I pray to the lord every night that these days soon come to an end so we can all reunite. Anyhow, today was our John’s first day of school he was very sad that you were not there to walk him in, but he soon realized that he was not the only child in the same situation. The children are worried about a bomb attack. Schools are showing a short film that states that a bomb could happen at any time with no warnings and it teaches them what they need to do in the situation. William can wait to find a job, he wants to help me bring money into the house he has take the role very series of being the men of the house.

Anyhow, these times are making us women more independent and value men’s work. Life is comply different with what we are use to, most of now drive and know how to fix’s a car, including me. I’m still working in the airplane manufacturing plant; everything is going well so far. It was hard at first because I had no idea how to use the power tools but coworkers have taught me everything. You will be proud of me when you come back and see what I can do. The airplane plant I work for is only ran by women. We hope that the work we are doing will bring all the men back home earlier. There are propaganda posters everywhere in Washington encouraging women to work saying things like “the more women are work the sooner we will win” “we can do it”

I decided to get the night shift it fits more with my schedule so I would not interrupted my housewife shores. I often get home just as the children are getting ready to leave for school. Immediately I make break fast and send them off to school, William helps me by dropping of John first. Then I take our baby Julia to Mrs. Conwell’s house our older neighbor to babysit her meanwhile I sleep—Julia loves her. I’m very mad at the government for not helping us. He promised to help working mothers by offering childcare but till this day I haven’t gotten the help. Anyhow, once I come back home from Mrs. Conwell house I Clean the mess in the kitchen, and then go bed around 10 am. I wake up an hour before the alarm goes off at 2:00 pm so I can make food. Our backyard has become a small vegetable garden, because the grocery’s stores are lacking on food—they are sending it off seas for the war. After I’m done making dinner I go to Mrs. Conwell’s house to pick up Julia who cries because she doesn’t want to leave. Once the children are back home from school we all eat together. I do homework with them until there bedtime comes. I leave to work at 10:00 and I have Mrs. Conwell stay to make sure that they are fine
I hope when you get this letter you are in a good state and write back as soon as you can the children love when I read your letter to them, I take some parts out, so they would not worry. Well hope to here from you soon.

Semester DOS, Blog #14

1. What are the most interesting aspects of World Wars 1 and 2?
World War One (28July1914 – 11November1918)was before the great depression and world war to was after the great depression.
Germany was in both of the wars i think they were the ones who started them too.
I know that world war 2 had something to do with Hitler and the Holocaust and world war one Europe divide into 3 or for different groups the alliance the triple auntont some thing like that.

2. What do you hope to learn about these wars?
Why people in Europe see them as part one and part 2 of a war. I also want to learn what causes the wars and who were involve. Why is WW2 known for helping the united states get out of the depression.

3. How/Why are these wars important today? How do they impact and/or inform our world today? hint: think about alliances, democracies around the world, cultures, international institutions, nuclear (and other) technologies, etc. i think the wars divided the nations between friends and enemies. we also developed a lot of new technology.

1935 Response to critics (Dr. Townsend and Huey Long), it provided pensions, unemployment insurance, and aid to blind, deaf, disabled, and dependent children.
Tennessee Valley Authority TVA 1933 Federal government build series of dams to prevent flooding and sell electricity. First public competition with private power industries
Wagner Act NLRB 1935 Allowed workers to join unions and outlawed union-busting tactics by management.
Works Progress Administration WPA 1935 Employed 8.5 million workers in construction and other jobs, but more importantly provided work in arts, theater, and literary projects.

Time has changed, even though we have not really learned anything from our past mistakes from history. I don't think we can use FDR organization because they are already made and most are still here today like welfare and social security. But we can work close with the banks so they don't commit these same mistake again and again.

well i can really recommend any; we are in a depression like 65 years ago but it we have some different needs. But i think the government should work with the banks so this doesn't happen again.

Semester TWO, Blog #11

Dear Mr. President Barrack Obama,

We are facing a great recession that has affected all of us. People are losing hope in your promise of reconstructing our economy, and we need to take action now to help stop this. The sad thing about this is that we have learned nothing from our passed mistakes, demonstrating that History does tend repeat it self. Our country went trough a every similar depression in 1929, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s modern ideas and open mind helped recover our economy. We need to act similar to Franklin Roosevelt focusing on what he called the 3 R’s “That is, relief for the unemployed and poor, recovery of the economy to normal levels, and reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression”. I think we are wasting a lot of money on trying to “fix’s” México drug war.

In my humble opinion, the best way to “fix” the problem is by legalizing weed this will reduce rapid growth of drug trafficker’s that has sadly become a new fashion style among teenagers. Also legalizing weed could start knew jobs in United States like its starting to do in California. During the prohibition ear in the 1920 some people started taking advantage of the situation that wanted to get money faster by bootlegging. Franklin D Roosevelt released that legalizing alcohol will benefit our country’s economy a lot more. Many new legal jobs were built from manufacturing to export. To recover the economy jobs need to be built, Franklin D Roosevelt started new organizations that built jobs that benefited the people that where affected the most. The REA one of the many organizations he formed during his first term as president “new deal”. This organization gave jobs to the people that put in the electricity in rural parts of United States and it also gave jobs for the farmer because with the new technology they could work more productive. Other organization helped places improve education in these parts of the country.

Today, in our time we can go to rural parts of united states and but electrical because mostly like every one has it know¬– but we still need to build jobs it’s a fundamental step we need to take to get out of this recession 11% percent of more of are population is unemployed and are taxes are going to help them when we can simply save the money by encourage small business owner to grow and offer more jobs.The war in Iraq has only benefited some– but it has affected more. According to warresister.org 36% percent of our taxes goes to the military war, and we have spend billions, when that could spend on education our number one priority. This war needs to end. Most of our country including I don’t really understand what we are doing there. We also need to make sure that the people we are giving welfare to really need it and just making it temporally. This will eventually force people to work instead of being lazy and just depend on the government for money. Mr. President Obama, I have hope in you– I know that either way we will get out of this recession but we need to do it soon not let it fix’s it self like Hoover believed it will.

Semester TWO, HONORS Novel Blog #1

America has always been immigrants’ hope of “succeeding and making it to the top”. Their capitalism system makes it sound like the land of opportunities; wealth and prosperity with the virtuous idea that the hard working is rewarded. Philosopher James Adams states "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” However, in the novel, “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair tells a story about the troubles immigrant families went trough in a meatpacking town. Upton Sinclair connects the bad and corrupted effects capitalism with different symbols. The Cans of rotten meat symbolize the hidden face of capitalism; the Jungle symbolizes the capitalist idea of survival is for the strong workers and Packingtown and the stockyards symbolize the moral and physical abuse of the workers.

Few have benefited from the free market but more have been taken advantage of it. Free market is a market without any intervention or regulations from the government making the business have the freedom to add and charge whatever they want to their products. The meat packing plants started selling rotten meat in cans. They add different chemical so the meat wouldn’t smell and look good. People were attracted to the cans because it of its shinny pretty surface. According to Sinclair capitalism is present in the same way; attractive surface but later you find the rotten and corrupted insides. Jurgis Rudkus immigrated from Lithuanian with his whole family in search of the American dream. A couple days from living in Packingtown he realized it that it will be hard to succeed in the corrupted and violent community. He was still determined to succeed and give his family a better life, like most immigrants feel when they begin. Real state convinced the family to buy a house. The family signs an agreement thinking that it was going to be great like they had told them, but the agreement is full of hidden costs, and the house is in a bad state.

The title of the novel, “The Jungle” symbolizes the survival of the strongest similar to a real jungle. The king of the jungle has always been the Lion and it will be really hard for a mouse to reach its title. The same thing happens in the book only that we are all the same species and strength is not determined by how hard you work but the level of class you were born in. Capitalism offers the opportunity to change your class level if you work for it. But the immigrant family realized that its not true the higher class level makes sure that no one can get to their place by eating the smaller prays. Upton Sinclair makes those who succeed in the capitalist system sound not the best of humankind but rather the worst and most corrupt of all. After Jurgis Rudkus lost his son and his wife he gave up in succeed and began to numb his pain with alcohol. Jurgis start working for a corrupt politic, Mike Scully who makes buy convincing immigrants to by houses to which the Jurgis’ family became victim of. Jurgis becomes more disappointed with society for his first time he earns a good salary but feels guilty. Marija, Jurgis sister in law, become a prostitute and addicted to morphine to help support her and the children.

Packingtown and the stockyards symbolize the exploitation of workers. For the factory owners, the workers are nothing more then a piece of meat in the meatpacking plants. The crowed animal stockyards symbolize the Packingtown’s crowed living, with no personal space or privacy, similar to animals in the stockyards. One day Ona, Jurgis wife doesn’t come back from work, and Jurgis discovers that Phil Connor, her boss, forced her to sleep with him. Jurgis with anger attacks Connor and is arrested, after the corrupted trials; Jurgis is sentenced for a month in prison. Her testimonial was worth nothing less then a piece of meat.

In conclusions The Jungle, has many symbols the compare the life of animals to the worth less life’s of the people in Packingtown. The American dream is cover by the words opportunities; wealth prosperity and capitalism, making people feel that the dream is reachable. Sinclair symbolizes the rotten cans of meat in the same way the american dream is covered by its shiny surface. The Jungle symbolized the true capitalist idea that big animal eat the smallest and Packingtown and the stockyards symbolize the moral and physical abuse of the workers.

Steinbeck employs Jim Casy to articulate some of the novel’s major themes. Most notably, the ex-preacher redefines the concept of holiness, suggesting that the most divine aspect of human experience is to be found on earth, among one’s fellow humans, rather than amid the clouds. As a radical philosopher, a motivator and unifier of men, and a martyr, Casy assumes a role akin to that of Jesus Christ—with whom he also shares his initials. Casy begins the novel uncertain of how to use his talents as a speaker and spiritual healer if not as the leader of a religious congregation. By the end of the novel, he has learned to apply them to his task of organizing the migrant workers. Indeed, Casy comes to believe so strongly in his mission to save the suffering laborers that he willingly gives his life for it. Casy’s teachings prompt the novel’s most dramatic character development, by catalyzing Tom Joad’s transformation into a social activist and man of the people.

Do you believe that the Grapes of Wrath successfully establishes sympathy for the plight of Dust Bowl farmers? Why or why not?

I think it has successfully establish some type of sympathy, i feel and connect to what people were leaving trough the great depression; but more then sympathy i feel anger against the same mistakes we keep on creating in history. But overall a great depression or any financial problems were you end up homeless and not knowing if you will eat tomorrow or where you will sleep is a feeling that people would prefer not going trough.

Reflection on Freedom and Structure

It takes me a long time to concentrate, so I have always had problems working in school with all of the distractions. I think I am doing well so far. I have been brainstormed and thought about what I could write and i also started writing too. But because its free time I really don't know if what I'm doing is find because i don't we haven't really come up with a strong structure of ampersand yet. For honors i am making this short "talk show" about ampersand and the writers. I been looking in youtube of different examples and started getting ideas about how its going to look and how i will be editing.

Dear Mr. President Barrack Obama,

We are facing a great recession that has affected all of us. People are losing hope in your promise of reconstructing our economy, and we need to take action now to help stop this. The sad thing about this is that we have learned nothing from our passed mistakes, demonstrating that History does tend repeat it self. Our country went trough a every similar depression in 1929, but Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s modern ideas and open mind helped recover our economy. We need to act similar to Franklin Roosevelt focusing on what he called the 3 R’s “That is, relief for the unemployed and poor, recovery of the economy to normal levels, and reform of the financial system to prevent a repeat depression”. I think we are wasting a lot of money on trying to “fix’s” México drug war.

In my humble opinion, the best way to “fix” the problem is by legalizing weed this will reduce rapid growth of drug trafficker’s that has sadly become a new fashion style among teenagers. Also legalizing weed could start knew jobs in United States like its starting to do in California. During the prohibition ear in the 1920 some people started taking advantage of the situation that wanted to get money faster by bootlegging. Franklin D Roosevelt released that legalizing alcohol will benefit our country’s economy a lot more. Many new legal jobs were built from manufacturing to export. Semester TWO, Blog #8

Compare and contrast Barack Obama and Franklin Delano Roosevelt as presidents. Be sure to cover topics such as their responses to the economy, their interactions with the American public and their relationships with other elements of the US government?
FDR:
-had good inspirational things to say
-had different views than Hoover, believed the government needed to aid or rescue the public
-suggested that parties work together rather than against each other
-FDIC
-Went on the radio a couple time a year so the country would feel comfortable with what he was doing in office and he could present it in a personal way (Fireside Chats)

Obama:

-approved/ in favor of 7 million dollar bailout.
-was wildly popular just after election.
-State of Union: 2 parties work together to fix economy.
-blames banks "wall street"

The Trans-Border Institute gets its money from funding and donations so if the institute goes through a deeper depression then what it all ready is it can close. Right know it barely has enough money to do what its doing.

I got thinkin’ how we was holy when we was one thing, an’ mankin’ was holy when it was one thing. An’ it on’y got unholy when one mis’able little fella got the bit in his teeth an’ run off his own way, kickin’ an’ draggin’ an’ fightin’. Fella like that bust the holi-ness. But when they’re all workin’ together, not one fella for another fella, but one fella kind of harnessed to the whole shebang—that’s right, that’s holy.

I think Audrey's mentor interview looks very professional. She has good captions and headlines and her layout makes her interview look high quality, something you could find in a real magazine.


Hallie Chavis
I like Hallie’s documentary for Media Saves the Beach because it was different. She used different angles, like rule of thirds to film the people. I also thought it was cool how she only used people to make awareness; she did a good job of giving facts that the audience didn’t really need to look at what they were talking about to understand what she meant.

I like the quality of the pictures Dani took she used different photo techniques making her photos look professional. Her pictures also tell a story and go with the captions.

Semester TWO, Blog #3

So many things were going through my mind as I sat down in his office and heard his speak with such patience and peace. I felt some type of admiration, inspiration and hope. I never heard some one like Charles my mentor talk the way he did about Latin America—especially Mexico. I forgot about the borders and colors dividing countries. I forgot about racism. The way he speaks about Mexico is the way we should express ourselves about other countries—respectful of people and their culture. I remember that my freshmen humanities teacher, Diana, told me “Charles is one of those guys that is all into ‘Viva la raza’ with out being Latino.” and the moment he shared his experience with me proved it.
I didn’t speak the language of math, I ended up learning Spanish and Portuguese,
Charles Pope was born and raised in San Diego. His parents were math teachers—his brother inherited the math gene, but Charles developed a greater interest in international relations, especially in Latin America. “I didn’t speak the language of math, I ended up learning Spanish and Portuguese,” Charles explained. “When I was in college I decided to study abroad in Spain and that really turned out to be a career decision.” After learning Spanish in Spain, Charles came back to California. In 2004 he graduated with a Masters from the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Studies at UCSD. He also wanted to contribute to future social justice in Mexico, his great interest in the Mexican culture and Spanish language brought him to the University of San Diego Institute of Peace and Justice’s Trans-Border Institute.

“If we are helping to educate and inform elected officials and the voting public I think that in the long run it is going to be very helpful and important.” The Trans-Border Institute is filled with people like Charles, trying to inform and educate people here in United States about problems such as immigration, drug violence, and corruption that are happening in Mexico that affect us “I feel we are making some small contributions to future social justice in México and into the border region”

Having the opportunity from his job to travel to different parts of México, such as Ciuada Juarez; one of the city’s that has been impacted the most from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the assembly plants, has made him realize that “ United States is responsible for some of the problems they have experienced and we have an obligation as neighbors to help them out.” Also while visiting Brazil he found similarities between México and Brazil, “They both have big economies, yet they are both categorized by high degree of inequality and they have a serious public security problem.”

Charles wants to work closer with Latin America so his career aspirations have changed. He knows that making good business can benefited the country’s environment and increase the growth of good paying jobs “I want to get into corporate social responsibility; which is how a business can make a profit and at the same time help the environment, labor and further social change by acting responsibility. “

I woke up like any other day around 5:45 but, I forgot that may hair was straight so I didn't need to do anything to fix it so I went back sleep for 10 more minutes until my mom woke me up. I got dressed, ate eggs and ham brushed my teeth backed my stuff and left. On the way to my internship, I don't know why but I was feeling nervous but the truth was that I wasn’t I don’t know it was a weird feeling. We finally go to USD and everything was completely dead the school was empty…. I walked into The Peace and Justice building which is a huge building with old European architecture making it look kind if scary to me. I walked in and the building was empty I went up stair to the Trans-Border Instituted and the doors where close I stayed in the building by myself for more then 40 until I finally heard something and it was Charles, my mentor walking. I talked to him in his office for more then 15 minutes reminding me of projects the instituted is running and what I’m doing. I started working on making on blogs about important news from Tijuana and then we went to lunch. I think lunch was one of the best parts because we ate Mexican food celebrating Jan 6 Los Reyes Magos a Latin tradition similar to Santa Claus I got to met many people that work there most of them have some type of relationship with Latin America. Once we got back to the office I started researching information about nafta’s pros and cons before and after. I enjoyed the day because I learned more about the people I’m going to be working with and different things about NAFTA.

So many things were going trough my mind; I felt some type of admiration, inspiration and hope. I never heard some one like Charles (mentor) talk the way he did about Latin America especially, Mexico. I forgot about the borders, and color diving countries I forgot of racism. The way he was expressing his feelings about Mexico, should be the some way we should expresses about other countries, admiring and respecting their tradition, food, people and culture. I remember Diana telling me that Charles was one of those white guys that was all into “Viva la raza” and the moment he shared his experience with me proved it.

Charles Pope was born and raised in San Diego. Both of his parent were math teachers, his brother inhered the math gene, but he developed a greater interest in international relations especially in Latin America “I didn’t speak the language of math, I ended up learning Spanish and portages” Charles explain. “When I was in college I decide to study abroad in Spain and that really turn out to be a career decision.” He added. After learning Spanish in Spain Charles came back to California. He wanted to contribute into future social justice in Mexico, his great interest in the Mexican culture and language seem the trans-border institute a good fit.

Starting with a good hook that interests the readier and all of the quotes used support an argument (so don't have a quote that talks about something different). Don't put a lot of quotes that make your writing not so important (so most of the writing in that final product should be from you.)

A good strong topic or argument makes a good interview because if the interview was about their life's its more like a biography and the questions can be more like "who are your parents" "where were you born" etc. But an interview has a point! Your asking questions about something specific. I think like mine was "what made you take the career you took" so most of the interview is about his choice and his experiences in his career. Not about how many dogs he had or the names of his parents.

I think we can use the loop to make the reader more interested. So start of by a quote they said and analyze it and go like that. Since your are putting your ideas and opinions it makes it no a transcript of a conversation and i think the reader also want to learn your opinions and ideas.
