Blog #30: More Nature Writing!

Hey everyone, here are a few choices for our last nature writing prompts.

If you read Into Thin Air, please respond to one of the following prompts:

1. Analyze specific qualities that make a person fit to successfully pursue extreme adventures in the natural world, but also could potentially lead to disaster.

I think there should always be some kind of balance between society and personal happiness. But sadly today, it is real hard to keep a balance with such a competitive world where you are either in the society fighting for a better place in life or out in the wilderness finding the beauty of the world “ALONE”. I think everything is bad if you take it to the extreme. We are humans and like any other type of living creature and organism deep inside we don’t like being alone, or forgotten; I think that love is something fundamentals as food and water and humans need that to survive and the best way you can feel love is through another person that cares for you. Even though I admire Chris McCandless, I think his mistake was that he became so consumed by nature and it’s almost the same as if you were consumed by the material society, like an addict to shopping or partying because there is no balance. As smart and talented Chris McCandless was he did not know how to balance his life and at the end of the book I think he realized that it was time to go back to society. He learned a lot of stuff and did many new and cool things but it cost him his life to realize that “HAPPINESS ONLY REAL WHEN SHARED” (Pg189).

I took this out of my essay, made a few changes, but I think it answers the question because eventually his immature brain lead him take the extreme to find his identity. It's sad that it cost him his life to find his identity and realize that happiness is only real when searched.

Honors History Blog #4

1. Discuss your successes as an honors student this past semester.

This year has been one of the most successful when it comes to my self and school. I challenged my self by taking honors in Biology and Humanities something that I would have never taught of doing. What made me change is the fact that I really want to go to collage, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to prepare myself. I feel I have accomplished a lot of thing, I learned to organize my time a lot better from when I started in freshmen year. All the assignment and worked that I turn in was the best I could do, something that I only did before whit art projects. I feel that my writing has improved even though I have along way to go I feel more confident. Learning about the loop and other stuff like taking -ing's away have improved my writing; now I think more as I’m writing then before. I also feel proud of my self because I have learned how to balance my life between school and my personal life with out going crazy. =]

2. Discuss what you might have done differently if you do this past semester of honors over again.

There are a couple of thing I would have done differently. Media Saves the Beach brought my grade down, I had an A and it went to a B because I was not in school for 4 days and didn’t email randy my rough drafts. What I would have done differently is spend thanksgiving break in Tijuana to do my project; instead of waiting for my mom to take me. Doing so I would have had some type of video to email for a critique but I didn't. I was also behind on this project because I need my translation so I turn it in the next day. But by starting my video days before would have helped me with the deadlines. I think things happen for a reason; I learned a lot by this mistakes that hurt my grade hopefully next year this is not going to happen.

3. Discuss your goals for honors in the second semester.

My goal next semester is to get an A or an A+ I know that it’s going to hard but I know I can do it. SI SE PUEDED! I think I would have done it this semester if it weren’t for an honors assignment I did not do and Media Saves the Beach critiques. Next semester I going to work extra hard to be able to finish my work before the due date, so I can get it critique and make sure its the best I can do. I'm also going to organize my time so I feel more relaxed about due date. I think next semester is going to be better because feel more prepared.

My other goals are to improve my writing!! vocabulary!! and reading!!

4. If you could choose any parts of literature and history for our honors work, what would you pick and why?

I love history so I would not know what to choose. But what strike me the most this semester was the 1920’s, maybe because we read a book about it The Great Gatsby, but I though it was really interesting time period that I can relate to a lot. I will also pick the 1920 because I think it was a point where materialism was over the top; today in our society I think its a little bit more balance.

Into the Wild

Many people have dreams and goals that are built during their childhood, but as they get older they become so busy and trapped in the vicious cycle of society that they completely forget what the world is and that we only have one life. Their main goal is now money and material items and to hold a good place in society. It is really sad to think that there are many people who are consumed by work and the material world that they never have time to explore or just admire the amazing creations of life. This brings forward emptiness inside because of their unbalanced life. Running, hiking, swimming, or just seeing nature and being in touch with it gives one pleasure and relaxation. I admire Chris McCandless because he was completely different than the average adult in today’s society; he had the strength to leave his “Rich planned” life and start a new one where nature became his parents and money, “materialism,” to him meant nothing.

Chris McCandless in many ways reminds me of my little brother—full of adventure and with a passion to learn and see the world, with no worries. Everyone should have some type of inner child. Chris McCandless was different than most adults because he never grew up, because of this, it was really hard for him to fit in society, especially to fit the standard of what his dad wanted him to be “responsible”. I really admire the freedom he felt because I don’t feel it. Since I was really small I started stressing about others’ problems and tried really hard to fit into society so people could like me, and never completely acted like myself. McCandless and my brother are not like that; they do things for themselves and not to impress others. When my brother feels like playing, he plays no matter where or with whom. McCandless also felt like not following rules and he didn’t. “He always wore shoes without sock—just plain couldn’t stand to wear socks. Chris couldn’t comply with the rule” (Pg40) said the assistant manager of McDonalds. He also had problems in school not following the rules. I also admire the fact that not many adults, especially guys his age, decided to go traveling when they could actually be working getting money and going out to parties.

Being born to a wealthy family where your life is practically planned, it’s hard to leave it and start a new one; because you could have a “successful “ life without so much effort. As long as you follow your parent’s rules they can assure you a good future, for example pay for your collage and car. McCandless was born into that environment—his parents didn’t ask him to work to bring money to his house, all they wanted was his obedience and good grades at school to represent them. I admire his strength to rebel against their beliefs and rules. He wanted to earn what he had and not just depend on what his parents gave him. “They will think they have bought my respect,”(Pg21) Chris wrote to his sister when his parents were trying to buy him a car. I also admire this because I wouldn’t have the strength to do what he did. I think if I were born to a wealthy family I would have just accepted my role. But with my life experience, “the environment of life I was born to” I think I would have done something similar like prove them wrong, that I don’t need their money to be successful and go to collage; because I was born with the mentality that everything is possible if you work for it. I also think he had the strength to live his life, not only to find his identity but because he was born homeless to his family. Not homeless because he didn’t have a place but homeless because of the rejection. His dad’s rejection was his starting point of feeling like he did not have an identity and that extreme need to find it. He was filled with anger and hate that nature was the only place he felt comfortable, that’s why I say that nature became his parents “I am going to completely knock them out of my life. I am going to divorce them as my parents once and for all and never speak to either of those idiots again as long as I live. Ill be through with them once and for all forever” (Pg 64) Chris wrote in his dairy. I think parents are really important in their children’s lives; if Chris was born in a more acceptable environment with a less stubborn dad I think he would completely been different. I thought it was really interesting when he traveled to México and found Mexicans’ to be warm friendly people. “Much more then American”(pg35) I think he felt a connection with them because Mexican’s are more accepting of people like McCandless that like nature and traveling then in the United States where success is base on education and money. I admire how he was able to leave his wealthy society so easily.

Mother Teresa once said that we have to give until it hurts, but many of us don’t. I also admire the fact that he donated his college “future” money to charity. Even though for him it was just one step to start a new life. He did something that too many of us would not do. Many people think he was greedy but they would probably not have done what he did. I thought it was great that he wanted to work to earn things and not get them for free. This makes him value his stuff even more. Everyone should be like this no matter how rich you are. We should feel the hard work it takes to earn a few coins. I also admire McCandless’ honesty and fairness. Westerberg tried to him extra money because he told he would but Chris completely rejects it he only got what he worked for and it was more then enough for him. “It’s rare to find a man as generous and good nature as you are. Sometimes I wish I had not met you though. Tramping its to easy whit all this money. My days were more excited when I was penniless and had to forage around for my new meal.” (Pg33) McCandless wrote a thank you card to Westerberg. I admire this because most people “in that situation” or homeless will take it and just be thankful not actually earning it.

Blog #27: Nature Writing

1. Do you feel, as one letter writer did, that there is “nothing positive at all about Chris McCandless’ lifestyle or wilderness doctrine …surviving a near death experience does not make you a better human it makes you damn lucky” (116); or do you see something admirable or noble in his struggles and adventures?

Many people have dreams and goals that where build during there childhood but as they get older they become so busy and trapped in the vicious cycle of society that they completely forget. Blog #25: The Great Gatsby!

The American Dream

America has always been valued as the land of opportunities; wealth and prosperity with the virtuous idea that the hard working is rewarded. Philosopher James Adams states "The American Dream is "that dream of a land in which life should be better and richer and fuller for everyone, with opportunity for each according to ability or achievement.” However, during the 1920’s the upper class started to interpret the “American Dream” incorrectly, causing people to become obsessed with money and materialism. The “American Dream”, become the pursuit of material prosperity; were happiness determined where you live and material “wealth” represented love. People didn’t work any more to become successful but to get fancier cars, bigger homes, and live a luxuries life. The attractive exterior filled them inside with moral corruption. The Great Gatsby, by F Scott Fitzgerald is a strong example criticizing the corruption of the “American Dream”. Myrtle Wilson is desperately looking for away to improve her life and have better “opportunities,” Daisy Buchanan is in love with money, and material luxury “wealth”. Jay Gatsby dedicated his life for the “pursuit of happiness”. With the economical growth, the immoral society of the twenties ultimately brought corruption to the American Dream of achieving prosperity.

Myrtle Wilson, Tom Buchanan's secret lover, represents the desperate immoral values of women in the city of ashes. The city of ashes is described by the narrator Nick Caraway as "a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air" On the top of her house, there is a old billboard with the eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg who represents God, staring down at the moral decay of the 1920’s. Her American dream is to leave the ghetto and live in a better place. Unfortunately for her, she thinks Tom is her opportunity to escape poverty. Tom is a racist, sexist that treats her, with no respect, the same way she values her self. Even though Tom treats like nothing, abuses her, breaking her nose, she prefers him then her husband who can’t give her anything else but his love. “I married him because I thought he was a gentleman...I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn't fit to lick my shoe… He borrowed somebody's best suit to get married in, and never told me about it, and the man came after it one day when he was out...I gave it to him and then I lay down and cried...all afternoon.” Tom gave her hope to have a better life, but also caused her death when she ran to a car thinking it was his. America didn’t give her the equal opportunity everyone should be given but also she was not looking for a normal life but one filled with luxuries.

Daisy Buchanan, is another victim of the materialist world, she perfectly fits the stereotype of a rich girl during that time, carless, flirtatious, and pushed around. Daisy is obsessed with her self and material wealth she doesn’t really care about anyone if it doesn’t involve her. Even to her own infant daughter, she never showed any affection or real care. “All right...I'm glad it's a girl. And I hope she'll be a fool -- that's the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.” She said this to Nick the first time her daughter was introduced. Daisy was not so much as a fool, she was just a corrupted product of the rich society she was born to, and she couldn’t value intelligence in women “I KNOW. I've been everywhere and seen everything and done everything…Sophisticated - God, I'm sophisticated.” Her American dream was over wealth and prosperity. She was confused and felt empty inside she couldn’t understand what was missing in her perfect life. When she had the opportunity of being free to decide what she wanted in life she acted like a little girl. With no confidence and strength to say what she really wanted like a stupid lamb thinking she is in love with a masochistic lion. She chooses Tom. Gatsby was there to give her money, love and care; but the words love and care were new in her materialist vocabulary. She never really said I love Gatsby or anyone. “It makes me sad because I've never seen such - such beautiful shirts before.” Daisy said this in her first time when she visit Gatsby house. Tom did make her feel obligated to show affection because he did either. With the death of Gatsby and Myrtle Nick realized that “They were careless people, Tom and Daisy—they smashed things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made….” Her American dream was corrupted the day she was born. Her artificial wealthy society made her feel empty in side and she taught that what made her feel better was popularity and more money.

At the bottom of the social ladder, Gatsby with one dream in mind becomes incredibly wealthy. Nick describes him as a “rowing a boat against the current” that was what made him The Great Gatsby. Gatsby became corrupted because his main goal was to have Daisy who represented money. He completely leaves his passed and starts a new life. In short years he makes a fortune of bootlegging, because it was the only thing that society was offering him to improve his life. Gatsby was different from other characters because he worked hard to get were he was at. He was also the only one that realized that the American Dream is only a dream “Gatsby's wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy's dock....his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him." At the end of the book Gatsby feels betrayed and used; he spended all his life working for an unreachable dream. Before he died Nick shouted, “They’re a rotten crowed…you’re worth the whole damn bunch put together” Gatsby made many illegal things, but because he stayed true to his emotions, not like the rest of the rotten crowed Nick taught he was great. His dream didn’t come true even though he worked really hard to get it.

In conclusions The Great Gatsby, described the 1920’s as an era of decayed moral values and strongly criticizes the corruption of the American Dream It’s portrayed in many character Myrtle wanted a better life and opportunities, Daisy wanted more wealth and Gatsby was looking for the pursuit of happiness. None of them where happy with what they had, F. Scott made their dreams look so close but they were unrealistic. The American dream is cover by the words opportunities; wealth and prosperity making people feel that they need that dream. But the truth is that The American Dream is based on material consumption "the more you have the more you are worth" but in the way to this "success" it is really easy to loss your moral values.

Even though this was more like a commercial I like the way they convince you to help. I want to do the same thing in my video show the problem whit my who what when where why and how and give evidence to support my idea have interviews for more info video that relates and at the end say what we can do to help and what we are al ready doing. So in a way I am trying to convince the audiences.

Honors History Essay #3

The Roaring 20's ushered in many new changes for American society, culture, the US economy, technology and more. Describe the most significant changes during the 1920's. Support your essay with direct evidence (quotes, statistics, etc.) from relevant history texts such as Nation of Nations and A People's History of the US.

The roaring 20’s was a period that brought new dramatic changes to American society, economical and cultural. The 1920’s are also known as the “Lost Generation” for its nonstop party’s and moral lost. World War one seemed to have destroyed the idea that if you acted virtuously, good things would happen. It was a decade were materialisms was the only thing that matter. This brought a new change to America’s society, the starting of the auto industry, a new liberal woman was born and prohibition started America’s endless war on crime and drug dealing. From 1922 to 1929 the national income in the United States went from $60.7 billion annually to $87.2 billion, its was a time were mostly everyone enjoyed the economical prosperity resulting in a materialistic life.

The automobile industry had a huge impact on American’s economy. The mass production, drove prices down and made them more affordable. In 1918, only 1 in 13 families owned a car but 2 years later, during 1920’s the materialistic era it dramatically changed to 4 out of 5 families had a car. In 1908 Henry Ford began thinking of way to reduce the cost of the Model T. He wanted to make affordable and durable but still sold for $825. He began with the idea of using international parts, instead of a single worker producing a car from begging to end, have each worker be trained to perform a single task this help reduce the cost and manufacture the cars faster. By 1914 he had reduce the cost to $490 and 1920’s the Model T cost only $310 affordable for a middle class family. At first, a buyer had to purchase the car in cash, banks were did not want to lend money because a car could be moved from place to place, unlike a house or land. But in 1920 general motor introduce buying a car on credit; they formed the General Motors Acceptance Corporation (GMAC). By 1926, 75% of all car buyers were in the credit purchase agreements. The number of cars on the road increased from 8 million to 23 million. Thanks to the great majority of materialistic people in the 1920 that wanted to own a car the auto industry developed productive ideas to sale and manufacture a that we still have today.

Women have always been fighting for rights in society, but between the 19oo to the 1920 the roles of women dramatically changed in the united stated. From being a house mom and depending on a men for a living to becoming active and independent. The 19th amendment ratified on August 18, 1920 prohibiting each state and federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote because of that citizen's sex. The amendment gave women freedom. They drank, smoke, danced, vote, they cut her hair, drove automobiles, wore excessive makeup, and went to petting parties “wild parties”. They were known as flappers. Having the opportunity of working gave then extra money of their own, free to buy things that had before been traditionally made at home, such as clothes making them materialistic. They started become more involved with fashion from dressing as a Gibson girl wearing a long straight skirt and a shirt with a high collar to becoming a flapper. A flapper was known as the “new breed” of young woman who wear short skirts, bobbed their hair, and listened to jazz. During this time women started modeling and carrying more about their appearance. In 1921, the first Miss America Pageant took place with a total of eight contestants in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The winner, a 16-year old girl from Washington, D.C., was Margaret Gorman. This began the model and brand industry in United States such as Coco Channel, Christian Dior, Jean Patou, Lanvin and Gucci this were all founded during the 1920’s and are still extremely popular and well know all over the world.

With the incredible materialistic industry of cars and clothes, people wanted more money they wanted better stuff. With the birth of materialism also came ways to make money fast. The 1920 started the begging of the endless war on crime and Bootlegging in the Untied States. Many intelligent people like John Dillinger, Bonnie and Clyde, Lester “baby face nelson” Gills and Al Capone took at advantage of the Prohibition Era that prohibit the manufacture and sale of alcohol in the U.S. They all came from a middle or lower class family and wanted a more money. They become a nightmare to the American government, starting the organize crime that US had never seen before. United states was not prepare for crime like this yet, but during this time the FBI, Federal Bureau of Investigation was formed and rapidly became powerful and productive. Al Capone was an Italian immigrant how became the boss of a criminal organization known as the Chicago outfit. He was known as an “American Gangster” a bootlegger that smuggled liquor. John Dillinger was a very famous American bank robber born in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was considered to most dangerous criminal of the time, but by others he was a modern day Robin Hood. Dillinger was involved in the deaths of many police officers, robbed at least dozen banks, 4 police stations, got more the $300,000.00 during his bank robbery time, and escape from jail twice. Although he spent a lot of time in jail, he always found a way out to continue their criminal “career”. The first time he was sent to jail for stealing a car he said, “I will be the meanest bastard you ever saw when I get out of here." And it become true, the United States were giving 10,000.00$ for his capture. Luckily the prohibition ended in 1933 but change “prepared” America for crime building FBI.

In conclusion, the 1920’s was not so much as the “Lost Generation” a lot of new important things came out that are still here today in our modern America because the materialism of the people. The auto industry grew and became stronger, women become independent and gain voting right, and Prohibition started and prepared America’s endless war on crime and drug dealing. I do agree that it was the roaring20’s a lot of stuff was going on that dramatically changed America in 10 years.

This is a short story film explaining the closeness between Tijuana and San Diego but how far apart they are also. I like this video because its short, but whit a powerful message, explaining that Mexicans are not Terrorist and the boarder is no war a zone like everyone think it is. You can see in the video how two white guys and 1 Mexican are peacefully playing volleyball.
I don’t think there is no missing information since there was really talking. This plays the role in MSB because I like how it was edited, but I also like how Tijuana and San Diego are portrayed as amigos “brothers” and they need to help each other out.

Blog #21: Gatsby! Ch 1-4
Gatsby and Nick are both somewhat detached from their surroundings. Compare and contrast this sense of detachment. How are they similar and/or different in this respect?

Gatsby and Nick are very similar, they are both detach from their community/surroundings. They seem to not fit in either of the new rich and old rich social class. They both don't drink and kind off stay back and watch. But Gatsby is probably more materialistic then Nick. Gatsby thinks that from his big parties he is going to get daisy attention, he is trying to get her attention with material things. Nick in the other hand, likes jordan he is trying to her attention by talking to her not buy spending money yet.

Nick Carroway is the narrator and he sound like a normal person he also told us in the beginning that he doesn't judge and we can trust him.

2. What do you think F. Scott Fiitzgerald accomplishes by chooses this specific narrator versus another choice, such as a different character or 3rd person?
I think he chooses Nick Carroway because he is the character in the novel that doesn't belong to none of the social class, old rich and new rich he is in the middle. I also think he is a good narrator because he doesn't judge people or choses a side.

1.What is the most successful element of this work sample? Why do you believe this?I think the most successful element in this documentary was the way they capture the scene. They probably used a wide lens to capture more and in better quality. In some parts they used a fish eye lens. I like the way they edited it making the music go with the video perfectly. I also like the color contrast it makes the trees and nature look more realistic.

2.What is the message of the work? How do you know?
I think the message of this documentary is explaining that there are in credible surf locations that people don’t know about like the Pororoca in Brasil.

3.Who or what is the intended audience for this work? How do you know?
I think the audience for this documentary is surfers, because it’s about this surf location in Brasil were once a year for only two ours something happens in Pororoca creating big waves.

4.How do specific elements of the work sample come together to deliver the message?They video recorded the waves in different angels creating a cool perspective for the audience, supporting the fact of the incredible big waves. I’m going to try to do the same for my documentary even though It’s going to be hard because I don’t have the equipment they did.

5.Describe one technique the creator of this work used. Why do you think this technique was used for this specific piece of work?
- Capturing the waves in different angle to make it look like if you were there.

Honors History Writing #2

America needs William McKindley

The stock market crashed, last year, resulting in a widespread economic depression leaving many to struggle. More than 3 million people are unemployed, and 15,000 businesses, 600 banks and 74 railroads were forced to declare bankruptcy. The government has no plan to end this economic depression. The elections are coming up and more then ever Americans need change. Americans cannot afford another selfish president that does not care about the nation. The depression of 1893 has left most families in debt with no hope. The USA needs to move in a new direction and William McKinley will help guide this country.

“..this year is going to be a year of patriotism and devotion to country. I am glad to know that the people in every part of the country mean to be devoted to one flag, the glorious Stars and Stripes; that the people of this country mean to maintain the financial honor of the country as sacredly as they maintain the financial honor of the country as sacredly as they maintain the honor of the flag.” Says William McKinley in one of his speeches convincing all of us that he cares about our nation.

The fundamental question that will determine our future, this November 3 in the elections, is how is each presidential candidate thinking of getting the country out of this terrible depression that is affecting everyone?

The United States is in the climax of 400 years of violence within our own country. It began with Columbus establishing that this continent belonged to certain white men. The nation is facing a dramatic depression because of the many bad presidents that did not do well administrating this country. This severe depression has strengthened the idea of over-seas market. American factories are making more than what the American people can purchase, the production of oil is more than can be consumed. Several years before the election, McKinley already thought of the solution, he said, “We want a foreign market for our surplus products.”

In contrast, William Bryan believes in making the same mistakes that have been committed. Bryan’s plan is to replace gold with free silver, providing easier money to farmers in poverty ‘creating money’. He thinks that with more money circulating the economy, the USA will be able to come out of the depression. But the truth is it is impossible to ‘create money’. He is tricking all the poor farmers in the south, claiming that there will be more gold and silver for everyone but the prices of food and goods will rise. Therefore, how will they be able to afford it?

A great opportunity in our interest of commerce is being presented. The nation more then ever needs a good president like McKinley who will make good decisions. There are armed troops overseas in places like Argentina, Japan, Ryuku, Bonin Islands, Nicaragua, Uruguay, China, Angola, Portuguese, West Africa and Hawaii who are protecting the interest of this country. The USA also posses the Philippine Islands; and if William Bryan becomes president he would return the islands to Spain! It is absolutely immoral to do it; the USA is responsible for the Philippines, as they cannot administrate themselves.

More than any other candidate, William McKinley is need at this critical moment. His experience with business will completely change the United States, from being the country with economical problems, depressions and panics to becoming the world’s most powerful country. This is the perfect time to make the change; it is time to export products like tobacco, cotton and wheat. Doing so will generate jobs to all different social classes from the workers to the owner of the company. Bryan’s plan of replacing gold for silver, even if it may work, will not generate jobs and will complicate the international trade because silver is worth less, in addition the rest of the world uses gold.

There is a way to get out of this terrible depression and become the most powerful country in the world; America needs William McKinley in office!

I also realized how important music is in a video. the song has to be different with no repeating beeps. seeing the video made me think that i have to record shoot from different angles it will make it look professional.

Blog #13: Industrialization and Coastal Environments

People in Virginia are scared to drink tap water or take showers because the water is really toxic, they completely try to avoid contact with water.
Basic Facts: People are getting scabs on their arms, legs and chest whit the shower water (polluted with lead, nickel and other heavy metals) caused painful rashes. Heavy metal in water also effect your teeth, the enamel is eaten away, what makes them nice white and shinny.

The article doesn't really talk about how the metal end up in the tap water, the who!

I Would like to talk about who or what is polluting the water, and how bad this really is, maybe get statistic to impact people. I will also liked to explain why it is so bad and what it exactly does to your body.

TOXIC WATERS
Clean Water Laws Are Neglected, at a Cost in Suffering

In fact, her entire family tries to avoid any contact with the water. Her youngest son has scabs on his arms, legs and chest where the bathwater — polluted with lead, nickel and other heavy metals — caused painful rashes. Many of his brother’s teeth were capped to replace enamel that was eaten away.

Neighbors apply special lotions after showering because their skin burns. Tests show that their tap water contains arsenic, barium, lead, manganese and other chemicals at concentrations federal regulators say could contribute to cancer and damage the kidneys and nervous system.

“How can we get digital cable and Internet in our homes, but not clean water?” said Mrs. Hall-Massey, a senior accountant at one of the state’s largest banks.

She and her husband, Charles, do not live in some remote corner of Appalachia. Charleston, the state capital, is less than 17 miles from her home.

“How is this still happening today?” she asked.

When Mrs. Hall-Massey and 264 neighbors sued nine nearby coal companies, accusing them of putting dangerous waste into local water supplies, their lawyer did not have to look far for evidence. As required by state law, some of the companies had disclosed in reports to regulators that they were pumping into the ground illegal concentrations of chemicals — the same pollutants that flowed from residents’ taps.

But state regulators never fined or punished those companies for breaking those pollution laws.

This pattern is not limited to West Virginia. Almost four decades ago, Congress passed the Clean Water Act to force polluters to disclose the toxins they dump into waterways and to give regulators the power to fine or jail offenders. States have passed pollution statutes of their own. But in recent years, violations of the Clean Water Act have risen steadily across the nation, an extensive review of water pollution records by The New York Times found.

In the last five years alone, chemical factories, manufacturing plants and other workplaces have violated water pollution laws more than half a million times. The violations range from failing to report emissions to dumping toxins at concentrations regulators say might contribute to cancer, birth defects and other illnesses.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

In the novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain demonstrates the cultural collision between Huck’s own identity and the values that were forced upon him by the morally corrupt southern white society. With the help of Jim who is and African slave, Huck matures and gains confidence, builds a mind of his own, and learns to value life and freedom. During the difficult journey to freedom, Huck is free from society; able to make his own decisions without restrictions.

In the beginning, Mark Twain introduces Huck as a rebellious, immature and strongly against “civilizing” which seems natural for a thirteen-year-old boy. He comes from the lowest levels of white society, with an alcoholic father that abused him all his life. Eventually he was adopted by Widow Douglas who attempted to civilize him by taking him to school, teaching him about religion and indoctrinating him with the same social values as white middle-class boy should be taught. Huck felt he didn’t belong in the Widows house, and the Judge decided he had to live with his dad. Huck didn’t understand the contradiction of society. He felt he was seen as property (a slave), that he belonged to the owner no matter what. “I didn’t want to go back to the widow’s anymore and be so cramp up and civilized, as they call it.” With low confidence and the fear of facing his problems and saying what he believed in, Huck faked his death and escaped to an Island away from the restrictive society. “I laid there in the grass and the cool shade, thinking about things and feeling rested and ruther conferrable and satisfied.” When Jim and Huck meet on this Island, they escaped in the raft that carries them toward “freedom”. For Jim it is toward the free states; for Huck, an adventure and being away from his abusive father.

In addition, Huck’s liberal mind and growing relationship with Jim leads him to question many of the teachings that he had previously received, especially regarding to race and slavery. Throughout the novel, Huck is put in many situations where it’s his moral beliefs or his conscience, which he builds from being Jim’s friend. He first had the power to turn Jim in to the authorities, but he didn’t. “Well, I’b’lieve you, Huck. I-I run off.” Huck promised him he wouldn’t say anything. “I saved him by telling the men we had small-pox aboard; and he was so grateful, and said I was the best friend old Jim ever had in the world, and the world, and the only one he’s got now.” Towards the end of the novel his dislikes for society reappear and influence the important decision he makes. Jim is sold to the Sawyer’s family and Huck is the only one that can save him. The more Huck thought about what was the right thing to do, the more he felt he was taught the contradiction of what’s “right”. He completely forgot about all the morals he had learned and built his own mind from his conscience. “I was trembling.. I studied a minute, sort of holing my breath, and then said to myself: All right, then, I’ll go to hell”

Finally, during this struggle to “freedom” Huck learns to value life and the opportunities he has. Once Jim was free he was still thinking of traveling west, no longer specifically running away for freedom but from avoiding regular baths and mandatory school. Also, Jim made Huck realize that the widow wasn’t that bad. She was just trying to help him by teaching him how to read and write. Education is something not everyone one has. “What did the poor old lady do to you, that you could treat her so mean? I got to feeling so mean and so miserable I most wished I were dead. ” Huck matured through all this process. He learned to read the world around him, to distinguish good, bad, right, wrong and friends. He also valued the importance of what the journey to freedom meant to Jim, and he was the one that was helped the most. Huck started from not caring about anyone, not even himself, to risking his life to save his black friend the only guy he felt comfortable with. “We said there warn’t no home like a raft, after all. Other places do seem so cramped up and smothery, but a raft doesn’t. You feel mighty and free and easy and comfortable on a raft.”

Thanks to Jim, Huck learns what life really is; a struggle. He matures by accepting that he can no longer run away from his problems because they are everywhere. He builds a mind of his own with his experiences. He also learns how life really is and finally learns to appreciate life. In the beginning of the book we were introduce to a lost child who had no morals. But it wasn’t his fault. His family didn’t spend time with him, so he learned everything by himself. He was independent, so it was really hard to for him to transfer from living in the woods (uncivilized) to living in a rich house with slaves and fancy things, which, for him, had no value. But Jim did everything his father and the widow did not do. He spent time with him. He heard him talk, but didn’t criticizes him or force him to become someone else. Rather, he gave him advice, love, and called him “honey”, like a good parent would. For Huck, it was a great experience. He learned that not everyone is like his dad or the people he meet before.

Honors History Writing #1


The gang known as “The Caucasian Crew" had been out on "beaner jumping" missions for almost a week. 37-year-old Marcelo Lucero was attacked and stabbed to death by this group of high school students in Long Beach on November 8th 2008. This was the second report of an Ecuadorean immigrant killed in a month, in the same area. Even though more than 145 years have passed since the civil war ended. Slavery was exchanged for discrimination. We are now experiencing the bad effects of a modern civil war.
Although the modern KKK, is not exactly the same group that terrorized African Americans in the 1860’s they still have the same basic goals and ideas; they just have adapted over time, to be able to infiltrate into different government fields, like ICE, border portal, police and politics.

Joseph M. Arpario who calls himself "America's Toughest Sheriff," is a law enforcement officer, and the sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. He transformed his police department into an immigration enforcement agency with President Bush financial support. But less than a year ago the Department of Justice for civil rights violations started investigating him. Joe Arpario has been target of 2,150 lawsuits in U.S. District Court and hundreds more in Maricopa County courts. Arpario is accused of housing prisoners (immigrants) in tents, making them appear before media TV cameras wearing pink underwear, shackling them in chain gangs, and trespassing into neighboring jurisdictions to unlawfully dump immigrants at the border for deportation. This is Modern Slavery. Joseph M Arpario said in an interview “being called the Ku Klux Klan is an honor.”

During reconstruction, once that civil war ended they passed the 15 amendments that prohibit the state or Federal Government from using a citizen’s race, color or previous status as slave voting qualification. But as a result the Jim crow laws “Separate but equal” made it almost impossible to be able to vote. They did things, such as the literacy test, which meant if you couldn’t read or write you couldn't vote. Sadly, I think this is repeating its self again.

Unfortunately millions of African American and Latino students in the United States are not getting an equal education to most whites. This is not only because of the urban schools they attended, where “the teacher worries more about the student not getting in a fight then providing a good education”. The money that schools get comes from the local property taxes. So in communities where the houses and businesses are less expensive, the schools don’t get enough money to provide a high quality education. This is unfair. This is institutional racism. If we financed schools differently every student, regardless of his or her "race", could get a high quality education would out having the necessity of going to a better school far away from their community.

To enter a good collage today you need to score well in a test called the SAT. Research has been done to prove that this test is directed towards middle class Caucasian students. A bilingual student, automatically take more time analyzing each question. They read the question in English translated in to their 1st langue and translated back and as we all know the SAT is timed so this is a big disadvantage. Most African American and Latino student, don’t have economical support to pay for collages, they depend on the financial aid. Of those who decide attended a community college, only 3% graduate from a 4-year university. This clearly is a sneaky way of keeping minority out of good collages. America takes pride in being a diverse melting pot, yet we contradict ourselves with exams such as these.

“They say that war ended a long time ago. But around here it’s like it’s still going on”[1] Many of us think we have reached a modern society were color and culture is not an impediment for anything, and that we are all have the same opportunity. But the truth is that we are really living in a society where racism is thrown under the rug and ignored.
Somewhere along the way we have forgotten to respect and value people regardless of their race and culture, strong stereotypes have been formed, hard to overcome, this is the prize of living in a capitalist country where he have liberty. The truth is that discrimination is never going to end we need to work in education and tolerance because “Respect for the rights of others means peace.” Benito Juarez.

As for “The Caucasian Crew” All seven teenagers face a charge of first-degree gang assault. After Mr. Lucero’s death, many immigrants told the investigators that the “polices our not taking our reports of attacks seriously, often blaming the victim; there’s little point in going to the police, who are often not interested in our plight and instead demand to know immigration status.”

Blog #10 & 11: What's the deal with Reconstruction? And your Civil War Writing

What's the deal with Reconstruction?
1856-1877
The reconstruction took place in south America after the civil war, the union who had won the war didn’t want the confederates south to go back to what they use to be.

What is/was Reconstruction? What went well? What went poorly?
What was good about the civil war was that the union won, this end slavery. But "president" Ulysses Grant took the troop out of the south and moved them to Texas so they could fight against the natives! There was no federal authority in the south so very quickly it become back to what they use to be. During this time that KKK became alive.

Why is it relevant today?
If the union had not left the south by itself with no authority after the civil war, I think many people from that area would be thinking different them how they are today.

Blog #9—Media Saves the Beach in the News

IMPERIAL BEACH
Following the flow of pollutants

The drifters and nontoxic dye will be released from the Tijuana River to just north of the Imperial Beach city limit, depending on the swell and other conditions.

"Dozens of scientists, engineers and volunteers in wet suits and immersed in 67-degree water are setting up sensitive equipment along Imperial Beach's shoreline to better understand water pollution". they are trying to track how pollutants are moved by waves, currents and tides.
This article relates to our project, Medias Saves the Beach, because of the water pollution.
Water pollution is on of the big topics we are going to learn in class and through our projects try to make a differences.

What ideas do you have for Media Saves the Beach? What content interests you? What projects might you create?

I want to make an awareness (documentary) video educating the audience “every one” about the importance of recycling, and how pollution affects or beaches and our life. Even though I love photography, I think the best way of making awareness is through a (not boring) video that all ages can watch and learn something new, with out it being so complicated.
I also want to do a video because i enjoy working with final cut pro, so i know its going to be a fun project!

“America’s first feminist”

“Silly, you men so very adept at wrongly faulting womankind, not seeing you're alone to blame for faults you plant in woman mind. After you've won by urgent plea the right to tarnish her good name, you still expect her to behave, you that coaxed her into shame.” This are two stanzas from my favorite poem, “Stubborn Men”, that was written by a brave nun in the 1660, when women did not have the chance to read and write, especially humiliate men. Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz was brave and intelligent enough to do it all, and therefore she is my icon of inspiration.
Through out history I have read and heard about many women that have changed the world from Cleopatra, Rosie the Riveter, Indira Gandhi to Hillary Clinton they have all been feminist icons of strength and intelligence supporting the fact “We can do it”; but non of them influence me like Sor Juana. I still remember the first time I saw her image printed in the cover of the book Poems, Protest and a Dream. It really got my attention seeing a nun sitting down in a library and with the word Protest as part of the title. I opened it and read, “What happy mean could there be for the woman who catches your eye, if, unresponsive, she offends, yet whose complaisance you decry?” I have never read something so strong against men from a woman’s perspective. It was my mom who introduced me to Sor Juana.
Sor Juana was born in Mexico, 1649 in a time when men dominated society, and a women’s highest achievement in life was to give birth. Sor Juana was a very determined and disciplined girl that always did the impossible to reach her goals. At the age of three she convinced a teacher to give her reading lessons, but when her mother found out she forced her to stop. But by the age of 6, Juana had taught herself to read and write. When she was ten her aunt hired a Latin scholar for her, but after ten or eleven lessons, Juana surpassed what the scholar could teach her and continued learning by herself. When she was a teenager she met the Mexican governor, who protected her and allowed her to go to the university. In 1669, she entered the convent where she could keep on learning and writing. She taught the other girls to not allow themselves to be manipulated by men because there is no intellectual difference.
Even though I have never lived through any type of physical abuses, I hate injustices, and just like Sor Juana, I want to find a way to help out the women that still to this day are being abused and oppressed by men and in other places by the same sexist (Machista) society. This is a problem not only affecting the women but their children, and everything converts into a vicious cycle, that affects all of us. Sor Juana together with my mom have given me enough courage to over come my fears, to do well in school so that one day I can become a social worker and help people live better and healthy live, the same way Sor Juana has helped me.
There are millions of cases of abused women all around the world and there are so many organizations that need our help to make a huge difference. One of the organizations I plan to help is Amigos de las Mujeres de Juarez. This is an organization that works towards ending crimes towards women in Ciudad Juarez and provides support to the family members of the victims. Since 1993 more then 550 women have died between the ages 12-20 and 600 are still missing. In Iraq there is an under ground organization hidden from the government that helps sexual violence and domestic abuse victims called “underground railroad”. More then 72,000 women have become widows due to the war in Iraq, and are left without male protection, therefore have become free for all. Close to home every 9 seconds a woman reports being abused in the US.

Blog #6: American Icons Reflection part 1

1. What did you discover about your writing during this project?
2. Identify and describe (at least) one specific writing technique that you used. How did you use it? What effect did it have on your writing?
3. If you had time for one more draft, what would you do?
4. Copy one sentence that you believe is well-written and/or important to your overall piece. What makes it stand out to you?


1. During this project I discovered that I’m a really messy writer. I write different ideas through out the whole paper, but the loop out line really help me to organize my ideas to get to point I need. I also discovered that when I write I want to change the readers mine and make him think like me.
2. The tips that we learned in class helped me a lot to make my writing better. Taking -ing’s make’s your writing sound more realistic and makes the writer sound like a confident person. The other technique that helped me a lot was the loop, especially with the outro, leaving the writer with something to think about
3. If I had more time to do one more draft I would have gotten it critique one more time, and taken some parts of to make it a lot shorter.

Blog #5: Photography Techniques


Rule of Thirds

This picture was taken two years ago in the Galapagos. I think it's a great example showing rule of thirds, because I’m in the corner and the person seeing the picture appreciate the background better with out forgetting about me (in the corner).







Movement

This picture was really hard to make, because I was trying to get my cousin to look like if he wasn’t in motion but the background looking blurry (movement) I think I accomplished it very well since I was moving at the same time he was, when I took the shoot.







Depth of field

In this photo, I tried focusing only in one flower, to make the other ones blurry. When some one looks at a picture like this it makes them only want to focus on the not blurry part. This is a good technique of trying to make something stand out.
Blog #4 Artist Statements & critiques

I love when people critique my work especially when it’s going to be graded, because they always find new things I didn't think about adding or changing. Today Corey read my art statement and told me to spend more time talking about the connection Sor Juana and I have, also to work on my last sentence making it sure that it ends strong and answers the so what question. As Corey told me what I need to change and improved I felt that my next draft was going to be a lot better.

But by the age of 6, Juana could read and write Sor Juana was not a typical child she abstained from eating cheese because she had heard that it slowed the learning process When she was 10 her aunt and uncle hired a "Latin scholar" for Juana, but after ten or eleven lessons, Juana surpassed what the scholar could teach her and continued learning by herself. When she was a teenager she met the Mexican governor, who protected her and allowed her to go to the university. In 1669, she entered the Convent where she could keep on learning and teaching other girls to never be manipulated by men that there is no intellectual difference.

Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz has been an inspiration for many Latin women to rebel against the Machista men. I have seen for generation women that have suffered and didn’t do any thing about it, because the guy made them feel like if they deserved it. Sor Juana has not only inspired me to never get manipulate by a anyone but also to speak that is on my mine if she had the courage to spill her beliefs feelings and pain in her poetry during that time then I can do it too. I really admire the determination and discipline that Sor Juana had to reach her goals. Nothing scared her from moment she had put in her mine that she was going to the university she knew she was going to reach it. This is the type of woman I want to be. Sor Juana together with my mom have given me enough courage to over come my fears, to do good in school so that one day I can become a social worker and help out other women and people to reach their goals and live better life, the same way Sor Juana has helped me.
